Risk Factors

This condition can complicate pregnancy, birth and even linger postpartum. It can prove uncomfortable at best and fatal at the very worst. (Mayo, 2022) The following are factors that increase the chances for the carrying parent to suffer from preeclampsia.

35 or Older

"Advanced" age in the carrying parent (35 years or older) (Mayo, 2022).

New Parents

First baby for both parents (Mayo, 2022). 

Twins or More

Being pregnant with more than one baby at a time (Mayo, 2022).

Chronic Health Issues

Carrying parent with chronic high blood pressure, both types of diabetes (excluding gestational), kidney disease, autoimmune disorders, obesity, and history of pregnancies with medical complications (including preeclampsia) (Mayo, 2022).

IVF or Similar

Nontraditional and chemical fertility assistance and/or insemination including in vitro fertilization (Mayo, 2022).

Time Between Births

A gap of ten years or longer between pregnancies (Mayo, 2022).
